We
do not want another Vietnam. We do not want to spend years
reviewing body counts. A war is something which, once begun
is like an avalanche. It mushrooms out of control and its
pain and sorrow is a legacy for many years. Cecilia Rodriguez
has organized across the U.S.-Mexico border for over thirty
years. After the 1994 Zapatista uprising in southeast Mexico,
Subcommandante Marcos of the Zapatistas asked Rodriguez to
head the National Commission for Democracy in Mexico, USA.
The commission's goal is to reach people in the U.S. about
Zapatista efforts for peace and democracy. In the past, Rodriguez
was Director of La Mujer Obrera, a Chicana working women's
organization aimed at eliminating sweat shops along the border.
She was also the first Latina to head a national philanthropic
institution, the Funding Exchange. Rodriguez takes audiences
across the border to understand conditions and struggles there.
